Shipping & Marine

In one of the world’s busiest trans-shipment ports, the firm’s legal advice and support is crucial to a wide range of marine companies and P&I Clubs.

MFG is the local legal correspondent for the vast majority of P&I Clubs, shipping lines, creditors and charter parties. The shipping and marine practice team provides advice in relation to commercial shipping matters, ship registry and finance. The team regularly facilitates the arrest and release of ships, including obtaining the necessary, and often urgent, court orders. The team has also represented vessel owners in pilotage enquiries and port state control investigations so as to protect member’s interests. We have experience dealing with disputes involving allisions, collisions, and vessel groundings including groundings on coral reefs.

We work with clients in the event of accidents, stowaway matters, injuries and insurance claims. Our relationship with the Jamaican Ship Registry is strong as we regularly collaborate to register ships here and abroad.

Our attorneys advise many connected parties, including wharfingers and stevedoring companies, crane and heavy equipment manufacturers, ship financiers, individual ship owners and private wharf owners and operators, among others.

The firm has represented the Port Authority of Jamaica, the owner and regulator of ports in the island, as well as the manager of the Kingston Container Terminal, the Shipping Association of Jamaica and the Caribbean Shipping Association.
